Grab a fresh cut of gabagool and prepare to turn the dial back to the 2004 Emmys.
Ahead of the 2024 Emmy Awards, which will air Sept. 15 on Fox, we are going back 20 years to reminisce on the shows that defined the early 2000s.
While Shogun and The Bear are leading the nominations in 2024 (see the full list of nominees here), viewers two decades ago were captivated by onscreen mob bosses and an acclaimed adaptation of a Pulitzer Prize-winning play as The Sopranos and Angels in America led the 2004 Emmys nominations.
In fact, Angels in America, nominated for 21 awards at the ceremony, had an incredibly successful night, breaking the record—previously held by Roots—for the most Emmys given to a miniseries in a single year. Among the 11 trophies the HBO series walked away with were Outstanding Miniseries, with Al Pacino and Meryl Streep also winning Outstanding Lead Actor and Actress, respectively.
Following closely behind was The Sopranos, up for 20 awards, which finally won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Drama Series. (The series was nominated in the category for each of its six seasons, winning it again in 2007.) Several cast members also walked away with hardware, including Edie Falco, Drea de Matteo and Michael Imperioli winning awards for their performances.
Other big winners included Arrested Development starring Jason Bateman and Michael Cera—which won the award for Outstanding Comedy Series—and the biographical drama Something The Lord Made, which took home the award for Outstanding Made for Television Movie.
But some of the most exciting moments happened on the red carpet before the ceremony even began, as Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick, and James Brolin and Barbara Streisand turned the evening into a glamorous date night.
The carpet also featured some exciting celebrity crossovers, with comedy legends Kelsey Grammer and Matt LeBlanc posing for a photo together in their dapper suits. Plus, The O.C. stars Benjamin McKenzie, Mischa Barton and Adam Brody reunited ahead of the season two premiere to take on the big night together.
To see who takes home this year’s glimmering trophies, tune in to watch father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy host the ceremony from L.A.’s Peacock Theater starting at 8 p.m. EST.
And while you’re putting in your guesses for this year’s winners, take a stroll down memory lane by looking back at the stars that attended the 2004 Emmys.
Two brunettes and a blonde walk into the Emmys....
And the Sex and the City stars walked out with two glimmering awards—with Sarah Jessica Parker and Cynthia Nixon taking home the awards for Outstanding Lead and Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series, respectively.
The Friends star and her then-husband were all smiles as they walked the carpet together. But Brad's smile was more of a smolder to match his shades.
The Sopranos costars, whose series was up for 20 awards, took the stage together and took home the trophy for Outstanding Drama Series.
The one with Christina Applegate.
The actress—who was nominated for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series after playing Rachel's sister Amy in an episode of Friends—rocked a classy dress paired with a scarf and a pair of silver heels.
The O.C. stars traded their on-screen teen angst for dapper suits and a stunning dress.
For the first time in...ever, Kristen Bell made her Emmys red carpet debut in a bright yellow dress while starring in Veronica Mars.
Now the longest-running main character in any live-action primetime show, we couldn't imagine a world without Mariska as Olivia Benson.

This couple is Two Much.
With their romance starting on the set of Two Much in 1995, Melanie and her then-husband Antonio walked the carpet arm in arm.
Kim was looking pretty in pink as an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series nominee for her role as Samantha Jones in Sex and the City.
20 years ago, the two award-winning actors shared a celebratory kiss after Sarah won an Emmy for her role as Carrie Bradshaw. Now, the couple has been going strong for 27 years.

The actress wowed in a brown dress as she showed off her Emmy Award for Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or Movie for her performance as Harper Pitt in Angels in America.
Celebrating 25 years of marriage this year, these lovebirds were just as enchanting on the 2004 Emmys red carpet.
The comedian walked the red carpet with then-girlfriend Alexandra before breaking up that same year.
The Will & Grace actress wasn't messing around with her coral dress and matching clutch.
It's yet another win for The Sopranos, with Michael Imperioli and Drea de Matteo taking home the trophies for Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress.
The actress turned heads with her lilac cut-out dress at the ceremony, where she took home the award for Best Guest Drama Actress for her role as attorney Sheila Carlisle on The Practice.
